A recent change to the mm code in: 87744ab3832b mm: fix cache mode tracking in vm_insert_mixed() started enforcing checking the memory type against the registered list for amixed pfn insertion mappings. It happens that the drm drivers for a number of gpus relied on this being broken. Currently the driver only inserted VRAM mappings into the tracking table when they came from the kernel, and userspace mappings never landed in the table. This led to a regression where all the mapping end up as UC instead of WC now. I've considered a number of solutions but since this needs to be fixed in fixes and not next, and some of the solutions were going to introduce overhead that hadn't been there before I didn't consider them viable at this stage. These mainly concerned hooking into the TTM io reserve APIs, but these API have a bunch of fast paths I didn't want to unwind to add this to. The solution I've decided on is to add a new API like the arch_phys_wc APIs (these would have worked but wc_del didn't take a range), and use them from the drivers to add a WC compatible mapping to the table for all VRAM on those GPUs. When SRIOV VF device IOTLB is invalidated, we need to provide the PF source ID such that IOMMU hardware can gauge the depth of invalidation queue which is shared among VFs. This is needed when device invalidation throttle (DIT) capability is supported. This patch adds bit definitions for checking and tracking PFSID. ZRAM's max_zpage_size is a bad thing. It forces zsmalloc to store normal objects as huge ones, which results in bigger zsmalloc memory usage. Drop it and use actual zsmalloc huge-class value when decide if the object is huge or not. This patch (of 2): Not every object can be share its zspage with other objects, e.g. when the object is as big as zspage or nearly as big a zspage. For such objects zsmalloc has a so called huge class - every object which belongs to huge class consumes the entire zspage (which consists of a physical page). On x86_64, PAGE_SHIFT 12 box, the first non-huge class size is 3264, so starting down from size 3264, objects can share page(-s) and thus minimize memory wastage. ZRAM, however, has its own statically defined watermark for huge objects, namely "3 * PAGE_SIZE / 4 = 3072", and forcibly stores every object larger than this watermark (3072) as a PAGE_SIZE object, in other words, to a huge class, while zsmalloc can keep some of those objects in non-huge classes. This results in increased memory consumption. zsmalloc knows better if the object is huge or not. Introduce zs_huge_class_size() function which tells if the given object can be stored in one of non-huge classes or not. This will let us to drop ZRAM's huge object watermark and fully rely on zsmalloc when we decide if the object is huge. It can compress at speeds approaching lz4, and quality approaching lzma. zstd decompressions at speeds more than twice as fast as zlib, and decompression speed remains roughly the same across all compression levels. The code was ported from the upstream zstd source repository. The `linux/zstd.h` header was modified to match linux kernel style. The cross-platform and allocation code was stripped out. Instead zstd requires the caller to pass a preallocated workspace. The source files were clang-formatted [1] to match the Linux Kernel style as much as possible. Otherwise, the code was unmodified. We would like to avoid as much further manual modification to the source code as possible, so it will be easier to keep the kernel zstd up to date. I benchmarked zstd compression as a special character device. I ran zstd and zlib compression at several levels, as well as performing no compression, which measure the time spent copying the data to kernel space. Data is passed to the compresser 4096 B at a time. The benchmark file is located in the upstream zstd source repository under `contrib/linux-kernel/zstd_compress_test.c` [2]. I ran the benchmarks on a Ubuntu 14.04 VM with 2 cores and 4 GiB of RAM. The VM is running on a MacBook Pro with a 3.1 GHz Intel Core i7 processor, 16 GB of RAM, and a SSD. I benchmarked using `silesia.tar` [3], which is 211,988,480 B large. The zstd compression and decompression modules added in the next patch require xxhash. I extracted it out from zstd since it is useful on its own. I copied the code from the upstream XXHash source repository and translated it into kernel style. I ran benchmarks and tests in the kernel and tests in userland. I benchmarked xxhash as a special character device. I ran in four modes, no-op, xxh32, xxh64, and crc32. The no-op mode simply copies the data to kernel space and ignores it. The xxh32, xxh64, and crc32 modes compute hashes on the copied data. I also ran it with four different buffer sizes. The benchmark file is located in the upstream zstd source repository under `contrib/linux-kernel/xxhash_test.c` [1]. I ran the benchmarks on a Ubuntu 14.04 VM with 2 cores and 4 GiB of RAM. The VM is running on a MacBook Pro with a 3.1 GHz Intel Core i7 processor, 16 GB of RAM, and a SSD. I benchmarked using the file `filesystem.squashfs` from `ubuntu-16.10-desktop-amd64.iso`, which is 1,536,217,088 B large. IOW, reuse_swap_page can reuse the page without waiting writeback completion so it can overwrite page zram is compressing. Unfortunately, zram has used per-cpu stream feature from v4.7. It aims for increasing cache hit ratio of scratch buffer for compressing. Downside of that approach is that zram should ask memory space for compressed page in per-cpu context which requires stricted gfp flag which could be failed. If so, it retries to allocate memory space out of per-cpu context so it could get memory this time and compress the data again, copies it to the memory space. In this scenario, zram assumes the data should never be changed but it is not true unless stable page supports. So, If the data is changed under us, zram can make buffer overrun because second compression size could be bigger than one we got in previous trial and blindly, copy bigger size object to smaller buffer which is buffer overrun. The overrun breaks zsmalloc free object chaining so system goes crash like above. I think below is same problem. https://bugzilla.suse.com/show_bug.cgi?id=997574 Unfortunately, reuse_swap_page should be atomic so that we cannot wait on writeback in there so the approach in this patch is simply return false if we found it needs stable page. Although it increases memory footprint temporarily, it happens rarely and it should be reclaimed easily althoug it happened. Also, It would be better than waiting of IO completion, which is critial path for application latency. Add a mechanism for the architecture to override the swap file size check in swapfile.c and add a x86 specific max swapfile check function that enforces that limit. The check is only enabled if the CPU is vulnerable to L1TF. In VMs with 42bit MAX_PA the typical limit is 2TB now, on a native system with 46bit PA it is 32TB. The limit is only per individual swap file, so it's always possible to exceed these limits with multiple swap files or partitions. The correct API to use to insert a pfn in .fault is vm_insert_pfn(), but vm_insert_pfn() can't override the vma's cache mode, and the HPET page in particular needs to be uncached despite the fact that the rest of the VMA is cached. Add vm_insert_pfn_prot() to support varying cacheability within the same non-COW VMA in a more sane manner. x86 could alternatively use multiple VMAs, but that's messy, would break CRIU, and would create unnecessary VMAs that would waste memory. Add the necessary CPU feature/bug bits. - Extend the existing checks for Meltdowns to determine if the system is vulnerable. All CPUs which are not vulnerable to Meltdown are also not vulnerable to L1TF - Check for 32bit non PAE and emit a warning as there is no practical way for mitigation due to the limited physical address bits - If the system has more than MAX_PA/2 physical memory the invert page workarounds don't protect the system against the L1TF attack anymore, because an inverted physical address will also point to valid memory. Print a warning in this case and report that the system is vulnerable. Add a function which returns the PFN limit for the L1TF mitigation, which will be used in follow up patches for sanity and range checks. One of the classes of kernel stack content leaks[1] is exposing the contents of prior heap or stack contents when a new process stack is allocated. Normally, those stacks are not zeroed, and the old contents remain in place. In the face of stack content exposure flaws, those contents can leak to userspace. Fixing this will make the kernel no longer vulnerable to these flaws, as the stack will be wiped each time a stack is assigned to a new process. There's not a meaningful change in runtime performance; it almost looks like it provides a benefit. Maintain the tracing on/off setting of the ring_buffer when switching to the trace buffer snapshot. Taking a snapshot is done by swapping the backup ring buffer (max_tr_buffer). But since the tracing on/off setting is defined by the ring buffer, when swapping it, the tracing on/off setting can also be changed. This causes a strange result like below: /sys/kernel/debug/tracing # cat tracing_on 1 /sys/kernel/debug/tracing # echo 0 > tracing_on /sys/kernel/debug/tracing # cat tracing_on 0 /sys/kernel/debug/tracing # echo 1 > snapshot /sys/kernel/debug/tracing # cat tracing_on 1 /sys/kernel/debug/tracing # echo 1 > snapshot /sys/kernel/debug/tracing # cat tracing_on 0 We don't touch tracing_on, but snapshot changes tracing_on setting each time. This is an anomaly, because user doesn't know that each "ring_buffer" stores its own tracing-enable state and the snapshot is done by swapping ring buffers. The BCM43364 uses the same firmware as the BCM43430 (which is already included), the only difference is the omission of Bluetooth. However, the SDIO_ID for the BCM43364 is 02D0:A9A4, giving it a MODALIAS of sdio:c00v02D0dA9A4, which doesn't get recognised and hence doesn't load the brcmfmac module. Adding the 'A9A4' ID in the appropriate place triggers the brcmfmac driver to load, and then correctly use the firmware file 'brcmfmac43430-sdio.bin'. Aside of that having an explicit seccomp enabled mode in the architecture mitigations would require even more workarounds. Move it into architecture code and provide a weak function in the seccomp code. Remove the 'which' argument as this allows the architecture to decide which mitigations are relevant for seccomp. The return value uses bit 0-2 with the following meaning: Bit Define Description 0 PR_SPEC_PRCTL Mitigation can be controlled per task by PR_SET_SPECULATION_CTRL 1 PR_SPEC_ENABLE The speculation feature is enabled, mitigation is disabled 2 PR_SPEC_DISABLE The speculation feature is disabled, mitigation is enabled If all bits are 0 the CPU is not affected by the speculation misfeature. If PR_SPEC_PRCTL is set, then the per task control of the mitigation is available. If not set, prctl(PR_SET_SPECULATION_CTRL) for the speculation misfeature will fail. PR_SET_SPECULATION_CTRL allows to control the speculation misfeature, which is selected by arg2 of prctl(2) per task. arg3 is used to hand in the control value, i.e. either PR_SPEC_ENABLE or PR_SPEC_DISABLE. The common return values are: EINVAL prctl is not implemented by the architecture or the unused prctl() arguments are not 0 ENODEV arg2 is selecting a not supported speculation misfeature PR_SET_SPECULATION_CTRL has these additional return values: ERANGE arg3 is incorrect, i.e. it's not either PR_SPEC_ENABLE or PR_SPEC_DISABLE ENXIO prctl control of the selected speculation misfeature is disabled The first supported controlable speculation misfeature is PR_SPEC_STORE_BYPASS. However, an skb copied from an skb flagged with pfmemalloc wasn't necessarily allocated from PFMEMALLOC reserves, and on the other hand an skb allocated that way might be copied from an skb that wasn't. So we should not copy the flag on skb copy, and rather decide whether to allow an skb to be associated with sockets unrelated to page reclaim depending only on how it was allocated. Move the pfmemalloc flag before headers_start[0] using an existing 1-bit hole, so that __copy_skb_header() doesn't copy it. When cloning, we'll now take care of this flag explicitly, contravening to the warning comment of __skb_clone(). While at it, restore the newline usage introduced by commit b19372273164 ("net: reorganize sk_buff for faster __copy_skb_header()") to visually separate bytes used in bitfields after headers_start[0], that was gone after commit a9e419dc7be6 ("netfilter: merge ctinfo into nfct pointer storage area"), and describe the pfmemalloc flag in the kernel-doc structure comment. This doesn't change the size of sk_buff or cacheline boundaries, but consolidates the 15 bits hole before tc_index into a 2 bytes hole before csum, that could now be filled more easily. Functions marked extern inline do not emit an externally visible function when the gnu89 C standard is used. Some KBUILD Makefiles overwrite KBUILD_CFLAGS. This is an issue for GCC 5.1+ users as without an explicit C standard specified, the default is gnu11. Since c99, the semantics of extern inline have changed such that an externally visible function is always emitted. This can lead to multiple definition errors of extern inline functions at link time of compilation units whose build files have removed an explicit C standard compiler flag for users of GCC 5.1+ or Clang.
