Kill this mutex and add "atomic_t write_ctr" instead. The writers increment/decrement this counter, the readers check it is zero instead of mutex_is_locked(). Move atomic_add(clear_fast_ctr(), slow_read_ctr) under down_write() to avoid the race with other writers. This is a bit sub-optimal, only the first writer needs this and we do not need to exclude the readers at this stage. But this is simple, we do not want another internal lock until we add more features. And this speeds up the write-contended case. Before this patch the racing writers sleep in synchronize_sched_expedited() sequentially, with this patch multiple synchronize_sched_expedited's can "overlap" with each other. Note: we can do more optimizations, this is only the first step. Even if the "write" section was not actually started or if it was already finished. With this patch down_write/up_write does synchronize_sched() twice and down_read/up_read are still possible during this time, just they use the slow path. percpu_down_write() first forces the readers to use rw_semaphore and increment the "slow" counter to take the lock for reading, then it takes that rw_semaphore for writing and blocks the readers. Also. With this patch the code relies on the documented behaviour of synchronize_sched(), it doesn't try to pair synchronize_sched() with barrier. Period of the PWM is configurable in the platform side. Platform specific functions are unnecessary anymore because generic PWM functions are used inside the driver. (PWM input mode) To set the brightness, new lp855x_pwm_ctrl() is used. If a PWM device is not allocated, devm_pwm_get() is called. The PWM consumer name is from the chip name such as 'lp8550' and 'lp8556'. To get the brightness value, no additional handling is required. Just the value of 'props.brightness' is returned. If the PWM driver is not ready while initializing the LP855x driver, it's OK. The PWM device can be retrieved later, when the brightness value is changed. Documentation is updated with an example. The level argument is exactly the same as the id argument but wrapped in quotes. To overcome this need to specify three arguments to the __define_initcall macro, where one argument is the stringification of another, we can just use the stringification macro instead. This set of changes completes the work on setns, adding support for the pid, user, mount namespaces. This set of changes includes a bunch of basic pid namespace cleanups/simplifications. Of particular significance is the rework of the pid namespace cleanup so it no longer requires sending out tendrils into all kinds of unexpected cleanup paths for operation. At least one case of broken error handling is fixed by this cleanup. The files under /proc/<pid>/ns/ have been converted from regular files to magic symlinks which prevents incorrect caching by the VFS, ensuring the files always refer to the namespace the process is currently using and ensuring that the ptrace_mayaccess permission checks are always applied. The files under /proc/<pid>/ns/ have been given stable inode numbers so it is now possible to see if different processes share the same namespaces. Through the David Miller's net tree are changes to relax many of the permission checks in the networking stack to allowing the user namespace root to usefully use the networking stack. Similar changes for the mount namespace and the pid namespace are coming through my tree. Two small changes to add user namespace support were commited here adn in David Miller's -net tree so that I could complete the work on the /proc/<pid>/ns/ files in this tree. Work remains to make it safe to build user namespaces and 9p, afs, ceph, cifs, coda, gfs2, ncpfs, nfs, nfsd, ocfs2, and xfs so the Kconfig guard remains in place preventing that user namespaces from being built when any of those filesystems are enabled. A single proc inode per namespace allows userspace to test to see if two processes are in the same namespace. This has been a long requested feature and only blocked because a naive implementation would put the id in a global space and would ultimately require having a namespace for the names of namespaces, making migration and certain virtualization tricks impossible. We still don't have per superblock inode numbers for proc, which appears necessary for application unaware checkpoint/restart and migrations (if the application is using namespace file descriptors) but that is now allowd by the design if it becomes important. This leads to a race where we can dereference a stale user namespace pointer. To make it obvious a struct cred is involved kill task_user_ns. To kill the race modify the users of task_user_ns to only reference the user namespace while the rcu lock is held. Therefore I arbitrarily find the root mount point, and follow every mount on top of it to find the top of the mount stack. Then I set fs->root and fs->pwd to that location. The topmost root of the mount stack seems like a reasonable place to be. Bind mount support for the mount namespace inodes has the possibility of creating circular dependencies between mount namespaces. Circular dependencies can result in loops that prevent mount namespaces from every being freed. I avoid creating those circular dependencies by adding a sequence number to the mount namespace and require all bind mounts be of a younger mount namespace into an older mount namespace. When the number of pids goes to 0 schedule work to unmount the kernel mount of proc. Move the mount of proc into alloc_pid when we allocate the pid for init. Remove the surprising calls of pid_ns_release proc in fork and proc_flush_task. Those code paths really shouldn't know about proc namespace implementation details and people have demonstrated several times that finding and understanding those code paths is difficult and non-obvious. Because of the call path detach pid is alwasy called with the rtnl_lock held free_pid is not allowed to sleep, so the work to unmounting proc is moved to a work queue. This has the side benefit of not blocking the entire world waiting for the unnecessary rcu_barrier in deactivate_locked_super. In the process of making the code clear and obvious this fixes a bug reported by Gao feng <gaofeng@cn.fujitsu.com> where we would leak a mount of proc during clone(CLONE_NEWPID\|CLONE_NEWNET) if copy_pid_ns succeeded and copy_net_ns failed. This can lead into some nasty situations when the caller spawns tons of bio requests taking huge amount of memory. This is even more obvious with discard where blkdev_issue_discard() will submit all bios for the range and wait for them to finish afterwards. On really big loop devices and slow backing file system this can lead to OOM situation as reported by Dave Chinner. With this patch we will wait in loop_make_request() if the number of bios in the loop bio list would exceed 'nr_congestion_on'. We'll wake up the process as we process the bios form the list. Some threshold hysteresis is in place to avoid high frequency oscillation. This commit moves the private wait_event_lock_irq() macro from MD to regular wait includes, introduces new macro wait_event_lock_irq_cmd() instead of using the old method with omitting cmd parameter which is ugly and makes a use of new macros in the MD. It also introduces the _interruptible_ variant. The use of new interface is when one have a special lock to protect data structures used in the condition, or one also needs to invoke "cmd" before putting it to sleep. All new macros are expected to be called with the lock taken. The lock is released before sleep and is reacquired afterwards. We will leave the macro with the lock held. Note to DM: IMO this should also fix theoretical race on waitqueue while using simultaneously wait_event_lock_irq() and wait_event() because of lack of locking around current state setting and wait queue removal. The kernel code will, whenever it updates the meta data, mark it as "unclean", and will refuse to attach to such unclean meta data. "drbdadm up" now schedules "drbdmeta apply-al", which will apply the activity log to the bitmap, and/or reinitialize it, if necessary, as well as set a "clean" indicator flag. This moves a bit code out of kernel space. As a side effect, it also prevents some 8.3 module from accidentally ignoring the 8.4 style activity log, if someone should downgrade, whether on purpose, or accidentally because he changed kernel versions without providing an 8.4 for the new kernel, and the new kernel comes with in-tree 8.3. The check for mandatory attributes is the only extension visible at the netlink layer. Attributes with this flag set would look like unknown attributes to some kernel versions. The netlink layer would ignore them and also skip consistency checks on the attribute type and legth. To avoid this, we check for mandatory attributes first, remove the mandatory flag, and then process the attributes normally.
